Dexterity games are characterized by the simple, but often very difficult aim of trying to get small moving parts into holes or go through hoops. They first became popular during the late 19th century and were exported around the world.

Royal Copenhagen was founded in 1775 and the first figurines and animals appeared at the Paris World Fair in 1889. The sculptures were hand-painted and an underglaze technique, developed by Arnold Krog, was used.
