Burleigh Ware

For over 150 years, Burgess and Leigh has been a working pottery. The business, established in 1851 in Burslem, began producing fine quality earthenware as Hume and Booth. In 1862, William Leigh and Frederick Rathbone Burgess took over. The company became known as Burgess & Leigh, and the ‘Burleigh’ mark was coined for the earthenware products.

William Leigh was a visionary with the twin aims of modernising production and caring for the pottery workers and their families. In 1888 he had the Middleport Pottery built on the Trent and Mersey Canal as a ‘model factory’.
